Potential Things is the debut recording from Toronto creative jazz quintet Canaille. Canaille (pronounced “k’NAI”) was formed by reedman and composer Jeremy Strachan in 2008, as a forum to test out his own compositions, tunes, and arrangements with a set group of skilled improvisers. The group consists of players well known to denizens of Toronto’s marginal music scenes: Mike Smith, bass; Nick Buligan, trumpet; and Dan Gaucher, drums. This record contains 11 out-jazz tunes, which put group interplay, humour, and mordant musical wit above concerns of intensity or aggression. Featuring top shelf playing, improvisational virtuosity, and fearless leaps into collective musical confusion, Potential Things is equal parts John Zorn, Willie Bobo, and half of Sun Ra’s arkestra jamming on “Waiting for Benny.”
